Title: One down
Post by: BrushWolf on October 12, 2017, 12:33:00 PM
Ok so  this story takes place on opening weekend. September 30 found me in a blind that I placed in a food plot I planted earlier. I had hoped in finding a big doe for the freezer. With the wind good and occasional acorn fall from a nearby tree I waited. Not long a group of doe approached. As the lead deer got closer she became nervous. I'm not sure why but she ended up turning around and walking away. It was the first morning so I had no worries. They'll be back someday I told myself. I returned home and told everyone about the morning my kids where kind of bummed. They like tracking and helping with a down deer.

With good wind again and the colder weather I was excited to go back the next morning. I found myself setting in the dark waiting for daylight. It was cold enough to see my breath and I was thinking I should have worn more clothes. After a while a deer appeared I wasn't sure if I would shoot it. I thought at first it might be a button buck. When I confirmed a doe she had made it to about 10 yards and facing me. All at once she spooked. I thought what the heck I wasn't moving and the wind was good. She left and I sat there a little dumbfounded. Not long after I seen another deer coming. This one had some headgear.

Now I new this buck I had seen him numerous times this summer. As he worked through the new food plot eating I told myself I'd give him a pass. It was only the second day I thought. I actually had a 6 yard shot and never pick up my bow. I watched him and the longer he stayed close the more I questioned my decision. He feed off towards the oak that had been dropping the occasional nut. I then thought man you let him get away.  After awhile it looked like he was head my way again. Now I setup my blind in a bottle neck so anything that wants to cross the hill has to go passed. The longest shot is probably about 12 yards.

When he got broadside he was about 3yards away. I let him take a step forward and it gave me a slight quarter away. I drew my 49 lb bow and a 400 axis arrow. The treeshark was razor sharp and sunk deep in the side of him. I hit the hair I was looking at and at 3 yards had no trouble picking one. I new he wasn't going far but sat quietly for awhile anyway. I got home and told the family everyone was excited and got ready in record time.

Now we spied it laying there before the kids. I have to admit it's the earliest I've filled my buck tag. I wasn't sure how to take it I was super happy with the deer. I'd made a good hit and he didn't get far. And  It is my biggest buck with a stickbow. I still have to admit I was a little saddened to have used my buck tag so early. But there was no time to ponder such things we had some work ahead of us. Here is there prize after all the hard work.

For those who are interested a sharp treeshark out of a 49 lb bow will do some damage.

And the head sliced through the meat on the back of the offside leg.

Love getting kids involved by taking them tracking. I think my kids enjoy tracking as much as hunting.

Through to grease it seemed a smear hear and spot there. But the grass really breaks it up. Now when we got to the leave and in the trees I could see the trail standing 10yards behind the kids. I had know doubt they would find it.

I gotta tell you those kids really enjoyed tracking that deer. They are both going to make great bowhunters. My girl has the patience of a steel trap and the boy he's a wild man to say the least. Both enjoy huntingand are excited for fall turkey season that's right around the corner.

The bow I built from scratch.  It's a static tip that's 49#@ my draw and 62" long. Cocobolo and bocote are the woods.
