Remember Mike from Maddog asked our opinions on what we look for in recurve?
around that time, I found a mention of him making a short recurve called machete back in 2012, so emailed him and asked if he still made those.
the short answer was YES.
but he couldn't use the old form, and needed to create a new form.
He asked me if it was ok to have a bow that's bit different then old machete? specifically, may be a bit longer..BTW, would I like it to have high brace-height or low brace height? as he was going to re-design everything from scratch anyway.
heck yes! So I asked him to make me one with low Brace, and riser/core/glass, all to 'Bowyer's choice', whatever mike decided would look good.
I asked him for it to be between 45# to 50# @ 28inches
and above bow is what he came up with. 50"(amo49" as it takes 46" string) recurve! Brace Height is 6.75". Mike told me it can go up about 1/8" if needed.
don't know what the limb-core is.. I hope mike can fill me in. but .riser is Zebrawood/blood wood accent/shedua. two different wood, but grain matched across the accent line, nicely done!
This is second one off the new form.
The first one came out 38#@28" so he has decided to go for the second try. He told me that the difference is 0.015inches in lam thickness... that's less then 4 pages of average copying paper! wow.
anyway...how does it shoot?
it isn't the fastest speed demon. I have another bow that takes that title. but is is sweet shooter!
may be relative quietness for recurve? almost dead in hand feel for such small riser mass? whatever it is, I simply could not put it down today.
to quote mike when he took out the first one out of the form:
"I'm not a big fan of short recurve bows or recurve bow in general really, but I couldn't stop shooting this one. I think you'll be happy."
and I can say this. He was right.
That's a sharp little recurve. I love my maddog bows. Mike makes some fine shooters.
Great looking bow.. .I see you like them short...from your list of bows...
I am looking forward to seeing his 64" recurve...
Craftsmanship looks superior.
Alex
Thanks for the props. I used hard maple as a core wood on that one, a .002(ish)per inch tapered lam and a parallel.
The cat's out of the bag, but no problem. I'll still debut this bow and get it on the market, soon. I'm also working on a 64" of a similar profile, only looooong.
I have to go to a family event in Idaho tomorrow, and I'll finish it up when I get back and debut both the 50" "Machete" and the 64" "Big Dog". I chose those lengths because the market offers plenty of choices from 52" - 62" in length, and I saw a void to try and fill.
Cool bow and even cooler story thanks for sharing
Looks awesome. Mike is a great guy and is always available to answer my questions. You did good!
Nice stick, tell us your draw length and how it does relative to stack and finger pinch. Looks like an exciting bow to shoot!
Hummmm....a 50" curve. I possibly see a new bow in my future, especially if I could get a slim, med-high grip!
That's a nice looking little Recurve!! Hope you have a great season with it

I like it. The red stripe really looks good.
Really nice Ted........

so here's a video of how the bow opens up. (no comment on my shooting ability please, I know I'm not good :) )..
comparing Maddog PP to Maddog Machete.
my DL is 26" actual (amo DL 27.75"?). it feels like it can go another 2 inches no problem. at least, there's no STOP RIGHT THERE type of wall that I get from Wright Stalker Recurve.
about finger pinch... very subjective. I shoot split finger, I own lots of shorties. compared to them, finger pinch is none-existent. but for those people used to shooting longer bow? can't tell you. I can honestly say that If I was to choose this Machete and say...Bear 48 supermag (I owned it for a while), I'd definitely choose maddog machete every time.

wow, i DIG that little recurve! i love short, light recurves, and i could see that thing being a KILLER out of a tree stand!
Has my interest!!
Great looking bow Mike!
That thing sounds nice! Looks like she really puts some zing on those arrows too! Definitely a contender for next bow.
