Title: Is this normal?
Post by: dresnor on October 09, 2017, 08:52:00 PM
I noticed this on my string the other day. I don't know if this is normal but it does not look right to me. I moved my rubber whisker up a bit by sliding it up the string to see if it would help quiet the bow a bit more. The bow seems quieter but this showed up after some shooting. It starts where the silencer used to be and is about 5 inches in length about 4 inches above the serving. I have shot with it like this with no issue  but I am worried that it will snap and damage the bow. Is this normal? Or should I replace it? Any advice is welcomed.

This is what the rest of the string looks like.

This is the problem area.

Please do not shoot that string any more!  That appears dangerous.  I would unstring the bow immediately if it's strung now and get a new one.  Might as well order a back-up string along with it.

It looks like a serious incident waiting to happen.

X3 please replace immediately, that string is unsafe. Lots of great sponsors here.

Time for a new one.  Where on the string is the damage?

Something is rubbing the string there or some strands were cut. Hard to say how many but it should be replaced. If it was below the serving I would have said it is rubbing your arm guard. Also keep the new string waxed.>>>----> Ken

That's pretty bad. The strands are breaking. Being it got that bad I gotta wonder if you weren't hitting something and if you used string wax. Watch once you change your string so this doesn't happen again.

That one needs to be replaced. And, you need a little shorter string as well. I never put that many twists in a string.

If it's string material you definitely need a new string. If it's silencer material it's not a problem at all.

That's a good point,MCS.Was your silencer material that color? It almost looks too fuzzy and the string underneath looks good?

The original post said that the silencers were rubber whiskers, so that fuzz we are seeing is probably the string. Also, it looks like the string has very little or no wax on it.

I have never seen that before! Looks like the string has frayed for sure. Did you super glue the knot from the whiskers to the string? I have read where some say that is a no no.

Thanks for the input guys! I put my spare on tonight and shot it to break it in some. I missed a planned night sit because of this issue but I do feel more confident in my string.

I am not sure if the whiskers on the old string were glued on place. They came like that on the bow.

On the lack of wax comments. How often should I wax the string? How do I tell when the string needs it? I did wax the string a few days before I noticed this issue.

Once again, thanks for the help!

Cat Whiskers are ordinarily not glued in place.  The glue would not work well with the wax on the string.  Cat Whiskers are either wedged in between the string bundles, or if the string isn't twisted very much, they are tied on with string serving, bowstring, or plastic cable ties.

Wax the string every week, if you're using the bow regularly, or when you start using it after it hasn't been shot for a while.
