Some buddies and I are renting a cabin by Patoka lake. How's the deer hunting around there? We will be there the first week in November. Never hunted there, any info about the area would be appreciated.
Thanks Craig
I live about an hour and a half away and drive there every chance I get. Look up Brad Herndon's book "Mapping Trophy Whitetails". There is no shortage of ground to hunt near Patoka Lake and Brad's strategies were honed just about an hour north of there. They work very well.
Good luck!
Oh, and you asked how the hunting is :)
Not very good if you just go out into the open woods and hunt. You'll spend a lot of hours watching only squirrels and turkeys.
If you use Brad's tips and look for the thick spots as they relate to topographical features, you'll see deer and an occasional bruiser buck.
The locals hunt it pretty hard, but there aren't many locals (which is why there is so much acreage available). I don't see that many hunters when I'm out. There are more and bigger deer around the ag at home, but I much prefer the big woods and the roaming area the Hoosier provides.
That's beautiful country. Find a saddle 1 mile or more from access and sit all day. Bucks should be running from draw to draw seeking love. Densities aren't great but there are big deer there. Good luck. Let us know how you do.
Thanks guys for the info.
