Title: Need some advice please
Post by: jt85 on September 24, 2017, 08:58:00 PM
What do you do when find the perfect spot for a stand where two trails cross but the best tree is on the opposite side of the trail? What I mean is I will have to walk across the trail to get to my stand. Would you let that stop you?

Nope. But, I wouldn't cross in front of the stand. Go further up or down the trail and cross there. Rubber boots also will help in a situation like that.

Sometimes it just depends on the individual deer.  I've had deer walk in my tracks and come in downwind.  On the other hand I had a doe come unglued and almost turned inside out when she came to the spot I stepped off the trail.

So far Evercalm has seemed to work for me. I put a little on the bottom insteps of my boots when I walk into my stand area. Now whether or not this has made an impact I can't say for sure, but, on opening day here in NC I shot a buck that was standing in a spot where I had walked in three times that day. In and out that morning, and in that evening. I had to cross the trail to get downwind of it.

Yep. Rubber boots and don't touch anything. Maybe put a little something out there to so they will hesitate for you to get a shot.

Jason you need a zip line, or a rope swing!

Craig I think you may be on to something! Sounds like I need to invest in some rubber boots and evercalm. I sure think this is gonna be a good spot.

Cross it where you want the shot to be.

:biglaugh:  That sounds like the perfect solution!

I don't know if they're closed yet or not, but the Gander Mtn store in Tulsa had their Evercalm on clearance. I think I got mine for half price, but that store may already be closed.

Just tell me the exact location of this spot and I'll check it out for ya.   :D  If it looks good, I'll give you my Evercalm. Lol.

In all seriousness, though, if you need some Evercalm to try out, you can have mine. That way if it doesn't work out, you're not out  $20+. Shoot me a text if you still have my number.

Circle around and come in on the tree side.

I seem to have this problem all the time and hate it!  Rubber boots have never helped for me.  Some deer pick me up and some don't.  Usually it's the huge doe in front of the big buck that gets me too!

I try to remove brush where I am going to cross and then do my best to jump across the trail - not perfect by any means.

After years of this I have to agree completely with Red Beastmaster above - cross where you can make the shot the best.  That is what I do in addition to jumping across.  I'd rather have them stop and go on alert broadside at 10 yards than somewhere else where I crossed as they are coming to me.

Thanks guys. I think I will try crossing at the point of my best shot. I'll let you know how it goes. Season starts here on Sunday and I plan to be in that stand

That's what I do as well, works well unless you are really picky and passing up lots of animals

JT-not only the rubber boots and ever calm but when you have a wet or rainy day you can trim a trail to the stand so you do not touch anything on the way in/out!
