Title: Grouse Hunting
Post by: bucknut on September 03, 2017, 10:57:00 AM
Going to Colorado this year in unit 76 to essentially guide/pack mule for some of my older hunting buddies in rifle season. I will also be scouting for a bow hunt in this area next year. I am taking my TD Elkheart to be strapped to my pack with a tube of arrows for grouse. My question is what do you guys feel is the best point option? These are my options on hand. Old broad heads, Judos, Thumper/Hammer or field points with the hammer behind it?

Thanks, John

I use blunts.  They're more durable than old broadheads and they fit in the foam in my bow quiver unlike judos.   Shoot em' in the head if you can.

I would go with an ACE Hex-Head, or some other type of blunt point. Reason being, you could run into legal issues, carrying broadheads during the big game season?

Is it legal to hunt small game during the rifle season?  I've only used broadheads on them,  but I imagine any blunt would work.

I like the Hammer glue on small game head by 3rivers Archery I also like the Gamenabber small game head both work well for me.

make sure to check the game laws.  Not sure about CO but in Washington you couldn't hunt grouse with a bow unless you had a valid tag for elk or deer during that season.

No restriction on the use of the bow for small game during a rifle season.  You can also use a .22 caliber pistol or rifle.  You can't hunt anything with a caliber larger than .22 during a rifle season unless you have an unfilled big game license.

Using a broadhead for small game during a rifle season is not mentioned in the regulations as far as I know.  No point in being a test case though.  There are plenty of options that make it very clear that you are not hunting big game.

Snowshoe rabbits are open October 1 as is squirrel but the pine squirrels aren't worth the effort, they are way too small for the trouble of cleaning them!

I like an Ace Hex Head with an Adder Collar for Stumpin and the occasional Grousin when cruisin through Elk country.

I'm seeing more than the usual number of snowshoes this year.  Mostly between 9500 and 10500.

That's good to here, snows have been coming sooo late, they are just to easy picking for the two and four legged predators with them being snow white and no snow to hide in!

Thanks for all the input guys. I previously called the Division of wildlife and verified I could Bow hunt grouse in rifle season and they said as long as I had a Small Game license and followed season regulations I was good. I have shot them with FP's and Judo's with so so results in the past. I have several Small game thumpers/Hammer heads. So that is most likely what I will be taking. I don't know about shooting them in the head though. Awful small target for a duffer like me.
