Title: As the season approaches ( tracking dogs)
Post by: The Night Stalker on August 24, 2017, 09:01:00 AM
This is a friendly reminder.
You shoot the buck of a lifetime and your unsure of the hit. You doubt yourself after following the blood trail for a while. If you have access to a tracking dog, don't do a grid search, back out on your marked blood trail and call for the dog.  It could be the difference in finding your deer.
This is a big mistake that hunters make. The contaminated scent trail confuses the dog.

What kind of dog do you recommend for blood tracking?

I have a wire hair dachshund from John and Jolanta Jeanneney but there other good scent breeds out there. Bavarian and Hannover blood hounds come to mind. Look up united blood trackers if legal in your area.

Several of the German pointing breeds specifically Drathaars (Wirehaired) and Kurzhaars (Shorthaired) have to pass blood tracking tests as part of their breed registration requirements.

I know a guy here in Md that has a female Drathaar that tracked a poorly hit deer 1/2 mile to a pond. The deer tried to swim but expired at least 60 yards out. His female swam out and retrieved the deer bringing it back to shore.

Jerry Russell uses a bavarian mountain hound. He found several bears this year that surely would have been lost otherwise.

Thanks guys! According to United Blood Trackers website dogs are legal in KS! I'll start my research now. Thanks again

Can't wait to wear ximos little legs out. You need to get me some syringes and stuff from work to collect blood for him
