Title: serving size help
Post by: trad_bowhunter1965 on August 24, 2017, 08:39:00 AM
what size serving do you use with 16 stands of FF with axis nock? right now I am using .026 and my arrows show a little weak think about .021

I use .026 on12 strands of D-97 for Axis nocks.  Don't know if D-97 is the same thickness as fastflite, but if it is, you could probably drop down to .021 for the serving.

I'd base serving size on nock fit rather than any showing of spine, though. If the nocks are tight, go to a smaller diameter serving.

You more than likely can call or email one of the string makers on here and they would help you.

Depends on what serving
16 strands FF with .021 will be approximately .104-.108 diameter
I use .026 on 18 strands FF and get .111-.114 and fit X nocks good

.021 is a common size of serving.  I use it on most of the strings I make.  It's hard to speculate about what size would be correct.  You just have to pick one, and if your nocks don't fit right, go to the next serving size up or down.  I generally try my nocks on the serving after wrapping just a little more than enough to cover the back-laid serving underneath, so I can unwrap it and start over without too much hassle if necessary.

also, something to consider.  Different servings have different laying qualities.  In example, if you use a power grip serving(my "go to" serving), it stays perfectly round even while under tension.  Doesn't show much wear either.  On the other hand, serving like halo, crown, and i'm sure i'm missing a couple others will tend to lay flat on a  string.

I believe that's why some people believe that the halo's and crowns have a slighter release.  I just prefer the power grip.

With them laying on the string different, different sizes will be different diameters.  A .021 in xs .021 will be closer to a .018 in powergrip.  a .030 in Halo is pretty close to a .025 in power grip.

Sorry for the detailed response, I just didn't want you to be investing money in a serving that isn't necessarily going to work out for you.  If I used FF, I would be of more help.

God Bless,

Daniel

Breathin. I like seeing people use actual measured finished diameters in any discussion of nock fit and/or finished strings. Way more accurate and relevant then simply saying (ex) "I use 12 strands".

That said, what diameter is your target for GT nocks? I try for about .110.

Blake, I am having difficulty understanding the question, probably me. What do you mean by arrows show a little weak, then a smaller serving size would fix it, thanks.

Before I reserved by bow string with.026 everything shot good including bear shaft now I am grouping about three inches to the right for me right handed that's weak.

Thanks,

Right handed grouping left is stiff.

If the nock snaps tight on string drop down serving size, If not try a little lower brace. I don't use ff so can not be specific.

Not intended to challenge you on this, but isn't arrows grouping to the left a sign of being weak spined?

*I may have missed where it says bare shafts.  I am referring to fletched shafts.

Steve,

have you ever noticed a decent variation in the nock throats of GT nocks?  I have had some vary as much as .005.

I know the question wasn't directed towards me, but I shoot for .110 as well.

I have Daniel. That's why I started measuring everything and love the occasional customer who can order by actual dia preferred. Not only do nocks vary and there are a ton of different ones, everyone has a personal preference for fit. And what is tight for some is loose for others. All part of the fun!

right.  Customer preference is huge!  Some times they want them loose, sometimes they dont want them to slide.  An actual measurement would be very helpful!

One day, i'm getting one of your mountain muffler strings.  I have heard absolutely nothing but good about them!
