Title: bow vise
Post by: kat on July 24, 2017, 05:17:00 PM
I got talking to a friend about holding a trad. bow while working on servings, silencers, etc.
Does anyone make one for recurves or longbows?

I sometimes use a rifle cradle used for barrel cleaning or scope mounting...

Regular vise with a towel folded up in the jaws. That's what I use.

Thanks for the replies.
I am getting one that was home made from a friend.
It is exactly what I was looking for.

Making one is rather simple. The tables I have in my shop are 1 1/2" thick. I drilled out 2, 3/4" hole in the edge, about 2 1/2" deep, and put a 3/4" dowel 6"-8" long in each hole. These are 18"-20" apart. I then took a small piece of bike inner tube and slipped over the dowel, cushion for the bow, when the bow is on the dowels, I wrap it with a piece of Velcro, or bungee to secure it to the dowels. For those who do not wish or have a table to drill into the edges, a 2" X 4"or 6" clamped to the table will work. I will try to get a picture posted today.
Thanks,

I would look at plans for a leather "stitching pony".

A "vise" in those dimensions could easily accommodate the riser on a bow.

I've recently considered making one as i'm doing a fair bit of leather crafting and a stitching pony would be very helpful. It would also be useful for anything i'd need to do on my bow.

I just open a top drawer of the cabinets supporting the bench and let it cradle the handle of the bow.  I have a drawer that I keep clean shop rags in that works great.

Looking really forward to seeing these pictures! I'm pretty crafty and can build stuff, but pictures are worth a thousand words to me.

I use a Stanley multi angle bench vise. It's a handy portable little thing.

Thank you Kat and the offer from dry creek to post.the rollers are PVC with carpet glued on.  The rollers are 21 inches apart and accommodate all bows so far. Made with left overs, but works

I use an Apple bow vise I bought on sale.  Doesn't take up nearly as much room.

(//%5Burl=http://imgur.com/3Jl1fEg%5D%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i.imgur.com/3Jl1fEg.jpg) [/IMG] I just made a simple wood box, cut a 3 " hole cut it in half and used bungee cords to secure and it works great.
