Title: Screw-on broadhead recommendations
Post by: Mountain State Archer on July 22, 2017, 11:55:00 AM
Ive always shot wood and continue to do so but thought I'd give carbon a try this years as well.  Need some broadhead recommendations.  Looking at 125 gn Muzzy Phantoms and G5 Montecs.  Anybody recommend one over the other?  Easy to sharpen?   Thanks AJ

Lots of good ones out there.  One suggestion I will make is the Cutthroat by RMSG.  I think they are really good, well made heads.

Killed a lot with the Snuffer SS.
Also liked the Wensel Woodsman Elite.
I moved to 175 VPA 3-blade to trial this season.

Ditto this ^^^

Deltas are a years-proven, wide cutting head and tough as nails, and fly superb.

Beauty of shooting carbons is the ability to front load the hell out of them, neither of the heads you mentioned are easy to sharpen in my opinion, phantom is probably easier than the G5 though, rmsgear is coming out with a 125gr from what I understand but have heavier heads as well and they are extremely easy to sharpen!

Montecs can be challenging to sharpen. At least for me. I like the phantoms a lot better. In my experience phantoms are sharper out of the package and easier to touch up.

I am happy with both Simmons and abowyer. There are a lot of good ones out there, but what you are looking at would not be at the top of my list.

My current favorites are Simmons (Tigersharks) and Woodsman Elite in 175 grain.

Op not to sound bad but the Muzzy Phantom and G5 Monotec have been the worst performing heads I've killed deer with.  Had multiple failures with Phantoms (blades coming out of the feral). And G5 frankly left poor blood trails.

Cut throats are very nice. I also like kodiaks and deltas.

Pending on the arrow weight that you're looking for, Zwickey 2 blade Deltas or Eskimos. You have everything you need to beef up the weight too, steel bradhead adapters, brass inserts. Zwickey's fly like darts without the audible whistling that some vented broadheads have. Best of luck.

You mentioned Montec G5, I have those and they have worked well. But I usually shoot the same heads as I do with wood arrows, just mounted onto a threaded adapter, although I rarely shoot wood anymore as I can control the weight and balance of a carbon arrow much more effectively. And, carbon is either straight or broken.

If I had to choose between the two the phantoms would be it. I have shot a lot of game with then and was my favorite head till I started shooting simmions. Never had a failure and the 4 blades always made for easy to follow short trails.

Another nod towards RMS Cutthroats.

I did order some Valkyrie 250gr Bloodeagles last night as a long term project for next years Spring Bear season.

I've killed alot of animals (whitetail/hogs) with the muzzy phantom SS version that was 225 grains. I always s had good blood trails and penetration. I'd recommend using a brass screw in insert to get your weight up above 500 grains if you can.
Lots of great heads out there these days. I really like the more traditional style heads with screw in inserts mounted inside.

Montecs are powdered metal....can't go there.

So, if I read you correctly....125s?  Check out the Red Rivers, they just became a Sponsor...based on the Fred Bear Razor Heads....a very time proven design.

If you are looking for a 2 blade...check Out Badger Broadheads.

Get the KME sharpener and you will have the phantoms hair popping sharp in no time.

The hardened steel really holds and keeps an edge for a long time. I've taken a lot of hogs with them and never had a problem.

I've tried a bunch of heads and the phantoms for me are in the top three but then again I really prefer a three or four blade head.

As others have mentioned, the Zwickey Eskimos are excellent (and are my favorites).

Designed to be re-sharpened and are very stout. Real life experience backs up the legendary performance - missing the target and hitting a concrete wall = trashed arrow and undamaged Eskimo - ooops!!!(employing the modification described below).

A slight modification of filing the very tip to a tiny, flat "edge" (like a "Tanto" point on the Cold Steel knives) is about all that needs to be done. With that, I'd bet the Eskimos will slice into and through anything on the North American continent - they definitely put the hurt on a concrete barrier - oops!

While i haven't shot one into a game animal yet, i do have a pkg of the Red River R1 broadheads in the 125gr weight.

The main blades are quite thick and seem very solidly fixed to the ferrule. I'm planning on giving them a whirl this fall so hopefully will have an in-field experience to report.
