Ive got a 1.5-2 year old blue tick coonhound that we originally got for an inside dog but never did well with housebreaking. Hes very timid and gunshy but has one heck of a nose on him. Ive been thinking about working him for tracking deer and possibly as a shed dog as well but dont know where to start on training. What would be a good scent to use for teaching him to track
Order the third edition of the book Tracking Dogs for finding Wounded Deer. It is a great book that covers all aspects of tracking dogs from training to gear and more.
Check out my hound Bear Dog on page 313.
X2 on Tracking Dogs for Wounded Deer. It is full of info. Check out The United Bloodtrackers. There is a lot of info there as well. A search for tracking dog threads here will turn up quite a few.
Consider joining United Blood Trackers. A great organization and after you join you can become a member of their closed Facebook group where the members post up videos and other good training information.
I have about a dozen blood dog training videos on my YouTube channel at Keyword: Russell Outdoor Guides if those will help you. I have been training and using tracking dogs for about 33 years. They are a tremendous asset.
Good luck to you.
I have a 5 month old German Short-Hair/Pitt mix, and she has a great nose. I was thinking of training her for tracking, since I don't bird hunt.
I'll have to get that book, and try her.
