Title: Bear T/D tiller?
Post by: Sirius Black on July 19, 2017, 07:11:00 PM
I will get with Bear tomorrow, but was interested if any Bear T/D owners have had issues with a negative tiller on their bow? I've recently bought one (A riser-#1 limbs) and some trouble tuning arrows to it. Did a tiller check, and it has a 1/4" negative tiller (more on the bottom). Not sure if it's the limbs or the riser, I have no other limbs to try. I asked Bear about two years back, about the tiller on their bows, and was told all their bows get a 1/8" positive tiller. Mine's certainly off! Anyone have an issue like this?

Just checked mine......My "A" is over 1/4 positive and my "B" just about even tiller.

Just checked a newer 2017 set of #1 limbs on one of my B risers.  About 3/16 positive tiller.

The fade out lengths may not always be identical on both limbs.  Better to measure out from the riser a set distance, say 3 1/2 inches from the limb bracket socket, and measure both limbs at that distance.

i had an issue on my Mag riser. To see if it was limbs or riser I removed the locator screws and reversed the limbs, upper for lower. Seems it was the limbs. I added some felt to the limb to even them.
I am probably way off base but I like bows with even tiller even know I shoot split finger.

I shoot split with usually a higher nock somewhere between split and 3under so zero tiller works fine for me.  Too bad about the negative tiller.  If you shoot 3under it should work fine or flip the limbs like you did.  I'll say it doesn't surprise me for a newer Bear product.

I've tried to flip the limbs, but it won't work on mine. There's a small bushing that matches up always with the same side. Thank you all for the responses. Orion, I'll try your suggestion right now.

Yes, it's 1/4" negative, no matter where I measure it. Bear is getting a call tomorrow.

I wish mine were a 1/4"negative. I've read that's around where you want to be for fixed crawl.

Both sets I've got are even, 2016 and 2017 production. Another weird thing,  older limbs have black maple laminations,  newer set has clear maple.

Back in the early 70s at an area Bear dealer we compared a bunch of limbs.  We did not find one set where one could interchange limbs with any other set even when they were marked at the same poundage.  Every tiller variation imaginable showed up with same weight limbs when mixing top or bottom limbs with a different set. That is not surprising since they were all tillered as a pair. On the sets that I had at the time the tiller varied from nearly even to 1/4".  Compare those with the Schulz longbows that I have owned, every Schulz was the same, I suppose that is the difference from factory to custom.

M60, I pulled those locator screws, and carefully strung the bow. There was a difference. That 1/4" neg. tiller went back up to an even tiller. So it appears to be the limbs, and not the riser. I never did call Bear yet, but maybe I'll get another set of limbs (I'd like #3's) and see what I get. Thank you all, and any further responses, or advise (this is my first Bear T/D) add them please.

I just checked my new 2017 number three limbs and they are 1/16 positive.

I have heard of people reversing there limbs to get a more desirable tiller.  I guess, what should it be if you are shooting split vs. three under.  I have never had a bow that allowed tiller to be adjusted so don't know what you should try for.  My bear takedown is 3/16 possitive tiller.  I shoot 3 under.  Would reversing the limbbs cange tiller for the better

Just left my bow with the store where I bought it. They are going to get with Bear, and figure something out. They've had a few bows other than mine come back in with the same problem.
