This is the first GLLI in Marshal in 1985. That's my canvas screen in the background that we used as a backstop for shooting aerial targets.

My first GLLI was 1986 or 1987 in Marshall. First time I ever drew a 100# bow (I had used to shoot an 86# Howard Hill bow a few years earlier). That was Denny Sturgis, Jr.'s Kolometz bow.  Now my heaviest bow is 57# Hill Tembo!!  This was the era I started shooting Robertson Mystical longbows, one I bought from Ron as a stock bow and one that he was selling for Denny Sturgis, Sr. It was an exciting time for those of us who were still shooting traditional. Vendors were coming back on board and Traditional Bowhunter Magazine launched a few years later. There are bigger shoots now, but the GLLI was the primer that really got things going in the mid 80's.

That picture from Marshall sure brings back a flood of nostalgia.  That shoot just had a special feel to me.

David, yes, there was just flat out excitement in the air of having such an event with like minded archers in that era. It was the first time I ever saw someone making a sinew backed osage bow. Gary Davis was doing a demonstration off to the side of the vendors and it was just eye opening as were the world of items available to us. This was before internet and before Traditional Bow Hunter magazine, so advertising had no real venue, but there were vendors there with there wares.

Anyone remember the canoe shoot at the GLLI in Marshall?

Yes, the canoe shoot and the standing Bear across the pond were great! I really liked the targets with the vitals inside so you couldn't see them for scoring until after you shot and walked up to the targets. A friend and I would drive all night going through Chicago about midnight to get there. I believe we went in 86,87 and 88.

Would it be OK for my daughter to bring and shoot her Samick Sage recurve??

For sure kids can shoot the 3D course with recurves, but longbows only for adults. As far as kids competitions, you'll have to check with one of the board members or ask when you get there.

Its about a 4 to 4.5 hour drive, 270 miles I think.  You'll find it is more than worth the drive, great peoole, targets, and events, and camping the weekend is only $10...at a great location, right on the Thornapple river.

Ron, I sure do remember the canoe shoot.  There was a floating gator anchored to a big tree root against the bank.  My buddy and I both nailed it low in the kill area.  Our canoe paddler was a young man about 16 or 17.  He said, "That's not good."  Us---"Whatta ya' mean not good?"  When we paddled up to pull arrows, the arrows were below the canoe gunnel level so very little space (no make that no space) to pull them straight back, the gator rocked back and forth when we tried to pull them, and we nearly dumped the canoe before getting them out.    :biglaugh:   It was a blast.  Never had as much fun as I had at Marshall.

Well..... just had to sell my longbow to pay some unplanned medical bills.     :(   Would it be frowned upon for me to shoot a Samick Sage recurve as well??  If not proper etiquette, we will just check out the vendors and wander around a bit.  I guess on the bright side, I will still be able to be in the woods this fall with my daughter, just not with the bow I had planned on.  Thanks!!

Check at the MLA booth they may have a loner longbow for you to use. That was the practice in the past, I'm assuming that they still do that.

Not sure you will be able to use a recurve as an adult. Don't think so but you will have to pay per person fee to get into the park and I think that is around $10.00 each. That is a Charlton Park fee not the MLA fee.

Mark, years (many years!) ago I attended the GLLI and with some friends. I was going to walk around with them and keep score. First booth we stopped at I was asked "where's your bow?" I told the gentleman in the booth I didn't own a longbow and being a lefty I couldn't borrow from my buddies. He took a new lefty longbow from the rack and handed me 6 arrows and a shooting glove. He said to have fun and bring it back sometime over the weekend! That was the Bighorn booth and Fred Asbell. I ended up with a Bighorn Ramhunter later that year.

That's AWESOME!!!  I would not expect that, nor would I take it from someone.  Unfortunately, we had some medical bills come up and I had to sell my A&H ACS Longbow.  I can be almost as happy testing a few out on the practice range and wandering around.     :)   Mark
