Have any of you ever owned or shot bows with stippling on the grip? How did you get along with the feel of the stippling? Did it feel good in your palm or slightly abrasive?
I had a Thunderhorn with a stippled grip. It was comfortable and did not feel abrasive to me. JMO. I did have another bow that I had checkered. It was really abrasive so I took some fine sandpaper and took it down a little. It's the best grip I have! Hopefully some others chime in with their opinions.

Dennis: Please don't stipple. It may not be as abrasive as checkering (depends on how it's done), but it really doesn't add anything to the bow. On a wood riser bow, I want the bow to find its place in the palm of my hand. Stippling and checkering keep the bow from easily and comfortably sliding into position.
On top of that, it looks cheap, IMO. I will not buy a bow with stippling. Pretty strong words, and I'm sure not all agree with me. :nono:

I'm a no on any kind of grip "grip" unless it's Dave Windauer checkering.
Dennis, I own a Thunderhorn longbow with stippling. I also own a Silvertip with checkering. Much different feel between the two.....but both serves the same purpose.
The checkering is more of a nonslip feel but the stipple is not slippery at all. In my opinion the checkering looks better. The stippling is not abrasive and feels comfy even in the palm.
Duane at Thunderhorn has been doing stippling for a heck of a long time. All his high end bows have stipple and there is a reason for it.
Different strokes for different folks.
All the bows I build myself I stipple. I like it the best when wearing gloves. I think it looks pretty sexy also.

I like the look of both but have only shot a checkered grip and it was very comfortable to me. I would like to have all mine checkered at some point.
Brushwolf YOUR stippling actually looks very well done. I cringe when I have seen a few bowyers do it and not do a very good job, IMHO it then ruins the looks on what is otherwise a flawless bow. So far the only bowyer I trust to do it is Jim Neaves.
That being said, I really like Windauers checkering also. It's done beautifully and to me adds to the bow. I love the positive feel on sweaty hands. Jim Neaves small stippling achieves a similar effect. To me the large stippling is only worth it for glove use in winter.

Stippling looks nice,but I prefer no stippling at all.I prefer a leather or beavertail grip on my longbows,personal preference.
No stippling or checkering for me!!! I like the looks of it, just never cared for the feel of it.

I like the stipling on my recurve. Gives a personal touch and did it myself- easy w a dremel if ya have any artistic ability...wish I could post pics....
I own 2 Thunderhorns with stippling and had a Silvertip with checkering they all feel good to me.
I have shot bows with it and did not like it with a bare hand. I have also had bows that always felt slippery under a glove. For those, I either added a light coating of GOOP or glue tacked a piece of kitchen shelf liner to the grip so the glove would not slip.
As for stippling...to me, true stippling has overlapping and random divets, not single divets spaced apart that do not touch, looking like a golf ball.
I think one guy does it and everyone else sees it and does it the same way.
This is a little stippling on a predator call that I think is the way it should be done for the most part...

Just remember it can't be removed like a leather or beaver grip.
I honestly prefer shooting bows without stippling or checkering. I like the looks of it much better but have come to prefer a smooth leather wrap over about anything else. A smooth leather grip offers a bit better traction than a bare bow when your hands are sweaty or wet from the environment, is in my experience most consistent in grittiness between seasons/environmental conditions, and isn't overly grippy to the point of preventing your hand from ever so slightly shifting into position as you draw. Checkering and stippling lock your hand in position tightly and that's great at the range when you can be conscious about perfect form, but in the woods a non-checkered/stippled grip is a bit more forgiving in the heat of the moment.
Personal preference, so I will add mine. I have one bow that is stippled, but I don't use it very much, and have several with the checkering, including silvertip recurves and TallTines recurves and longbows. Essentially, I would never order one without the checkering. When I got my first Stickflinger, I wasn't sure about it, but it makes your grip much more secure when hunting in hot, humid conditions, or if you are exerting yourself. The checkering does a better job in this regard compared to the stippling, in my opinion.
