Hey guys,
I just bought a new to me Schafer Sivertip from the Classifieds. It is a wonderful bow and it shoots great. With that said, however, it seems to be louder than my one piece Dan Quillian Canebrake.
At present, I have a string wrapped in yarn on the end, puff silencers, and I even put a little felt in the grooves towards the tips. I put some felt where the limbs bolt to the riser. My brace height is set to 7 1/2 as suggested by bowyer.
Do you have any more suggestions for me to try?

On the tip I had I ended up with wool puffs (hush puppies) 1/4 from top and 1/3 from bottom. Laced in a few cat whiskers with the wool, wool around the string ends like you did and shot 12 gpp for arrow weight. Play around with your brace too.
Are you shooting three under or split? Three under always seems louder to me.
Agreed. 3-under is louder. Seem to have about everything on the string one could put there to silence the string, other than limb savers. I don't use them, but you have everything else on your string but them.
Might just do better with a different string material. Doesn't hurt to experiment. Good luck.
7 1/2" BH is in the low side as far as I'm concerned. Every Schafer recurve I ever had the best brace hgt was 7 5/8"-8"
Also, get a quality skinny string. Had great results on all my bows
I have 10 Silvertips and everyone is quiet, maybe your arrow is too stiff hitting the riser so it makes more noise.
Try a different string there are several sponsors that can fix you up. I had a bow that sounded like a .22 going off never heard anything like it put a different string on and it's as quite as a mouse.
I suspect if you raise your brace height 1/2" or so the sound issue will improve.
How about your bows weight and arrow weight .
Sometimes just a little heavier arrows can make a difference.
10-12 gpp could be the ticket.

Add my voice to the BH team. When I get a new bow and it's noisy after putting one of Allen's fine strings on it my first step is to increase BH a bit, and that usually solves the issue.
1. FF or Non-FF Tip? If it is indeed FF then you absolutely need to be using a quality FF string with not too many twists in it...an overtwisted string will add noise. Dave Windauers stock strings are actually pretty darn good as far as stock strings go, just make sure it's the right length (4" less than bow length) and that it isn't twisted up beyond belief...I like my finished adjusted string to have only about 1 twist per inch MAX in it.
2. think about increasing the BH. I have my Tip at 7.5" and I find it is very quiet for a recurve...I say for a recurve because almost every recurve is going to have just a bit more noise than any hybrid or longbow
3. is your arrow heavy enough? Tips are very high performance for a working recurve. If your arrow isn't at least 10 gpp or even more that could contribute to the noise you perceive. Where Tips really shine is on long shots. They have great cast compared to many other bows so you'll find you can easily shoot 11-12 gpp and end up with trajectory not far off other bows youve shot especially when shooting past 20 yds.
4. string material and string thickness? I favor materials with as little stretch as possible (Fury, BCY X, 8125 etc) and not an overbuilt string. I'm not saying use a super skinny string, but one that tends to be narrower rather than a dang "rope".
5. arrow tuning. this is a biggie. you'd be surprised that the arrow may actually be bouncing off the riser. experiment with the tuning and see what you get. Honestly I'd start there. Just having the wrong arrow can cause a lot of extra noise, sometimes it can be so loud it borders on a .22 going off LOL
My 60" Tip runs a low stretch string at 7.5" brace, a 10gpp arrow and wool puffs at the 1/4 points, and no padding of any kind in the string grooves or limb mounts and I find the bow to be among the quietest recurves I've ever shot.
The last X-factor is your release. A bad release can greatly magnify a bows noise..some bows give you more feedback in this regard but if you pluck the string you may get an increased 'report'.

I'm currently shooting a 615 grain arrow--(190 Simmons treeshark with 50 grain insert up front.) Full Length carbon Beman dressed up to look like wood.
The bow is 56#@28--I have a longer draw--probably 29-29.5.
Even at longer draw length, (adding 3#/inch), I'm ball parking right at 10.6 gpp. I could try heavier, but arrow seems to fly true.
The bow is FF--The guy who sold it to me put a 10 ring string on it.= which looks awesome.
I'll increase the BH to 8--bumped up to 7 5/8 and it helped.
Where would I be without the Tradgang bringing me along?

Good luck with it. I draw right 29ish on my 60" as well, since it tunes I prefer the lower 7.5" height for the extra smoothness,less preload on the limbs, but 7 5/8 is still dandy. What bows have you been shooting up to now? If you tell me hybrids and longbows well then sheesh that's why you think the little bit of sound from a Schafer curve is noisy LOL!! Anyway, sounds like you solved your problem? Pun intended!
At first I would try to find out the sweet spot of the bows Brace High.
It means, find the Brace High where the sound is the most quiet!
That is a bood Base o tune further.
A little trick on quieting limbs with string silencers is to place them about at 10" from the top & 14" from the bottom tip notch. This helps considerably on string oscillation noise.

On mine I have an SBD string, two of the rubber limbsaver everlast string leeches, that is two up top and two down low and then just mole skin where string makes contact on the "curve". She is quiet! but imagine with all you have done Id play with Brace height.
