June 30 - July 1-2, will be the first ever Montana Selfbow Jamboree!
The event will be held at Bill Owens farm, 2700 Logan/Trident Rd. just off I-90 near Threeforks, Montana. There are going to be a bunch of folks coming from the Oklahoma/Kansas area bringing osage, and lots of knowledge to help folks learn how to build a selfbow. Also, I have it on good word that a bunch from the Washington/Oregon area are going to do their best to make it also, with knowledge, and bow woods from the west coast! There are going to be some of the best Montana bowyer's at the event also!
This is a great opportunity, to make a selfbow, pick up some great bow wood, and hang out with a really great group of good folks!
Thanks,
I'm looking forward to meeting a bunch of new friends up there this year!
Can it be moved to one of my non-work weekends. Geez
Just an additional note on this, some of the finest bowyers Montana has, are planning to attend this event..
Thanks,
Will there be bow building classes for novices? Would love to learn how to make one.
Lone Hunter
Yes, there is bow building instruction for any novices that want to make a selfbow. You will be teamed up with somebody who experienced, and successful, making selfbows. The folks from Oklahoma teach over a hundred people each year and are generously donating their time to help us put this initial event on. The cost of instruction is $30, which includes a membership in the Traditional Bowhunters of Montana. The TBM is providing financial support for the event. Limited tools are available for use, bring a drawknife, file, and scrapper if you have them. Osage and Yew staves will be available for purchase from vendors and some instructors. Look up the Montana Selfbow Jamboree on Facebook for more information. I will post a copy of the flyer on the Trad Events forum later this evening.
Thanks Walt, sounds just like what I want. Will throw the camper on and head over. Mike

Here is the flyer. This is really the first event of this kind in our neck of the woods. It promises to be a fun one!
This is great news! I will make the journey. Thanks for the heads-up!

Thanks,
Sounds like a great event and several guys I've wanted to meet for a long time. Can't make it this year but would look forward to another time because I'm sure missing Montana.
Have fun guys and looking forward to the picks!!!

I might be able to make it. It will be a bit of a drive but I think I can handle the 10 minute drive. Always wanted to learn how to make a selfbow.
Can anyone tell me if I can park my 36 foot trailer and how much does it cost?

Blake,
There is plenty of primitive parking, no hook-ups for electricity, water, or sewer. Water is available at the registration/barn area via a garden hose. There will be porta-potty's and a dumpster for trash on-site. Fires will be limited to the horse training/lunging area. The town of Three Forks is a ten minute drive and has most everything one needs, including camping, restaurants, groceries, Ect.... Bozeman is a 25 minute drive.

Thanks,
Let's keep this on the front page.
Really looking forward to this. Plan on heading over Thursday, staying over somewhere close and showing up Friday morning. Been pestering Jim Rempp for years to teach me but it never worked out. It would be awesome to shoot something with a bow I made.
I would really like to make it to this event, but I think it's just a bit to far for me. Maybe I'll get lucky and someone passing through can scoop me up.lol
Have fun guys. I wish I could be there. It will be pretty cool saying you were there from the beginning
It's getting close!
About a week to go...lets keep this up!

I like them, you done good Mark.
Grant and Craig are putting dibs on the two training flat brimed hats.
Even though I am not from Montana, I think this would be awesome to attend! Someday I would like to try my hand at making a selfbow.

Keeping this up....
This is the week it all begins! Hope some of you will make it.....
hoping for lots of pictures :)
Back up for the folks that can make it. Unfortunately I won't be able.
Also hoping for lots of pics...Mark! :D
I will be there with some staves and shafts for sale and helping out the beginners. Looking forward to it!
I heard people have already started to arrive. Unfortunately, I ended up having to work tomorrow, but I will be out there tomorrow evening through Sunday.
Have fun guys & gals
I hope there was a good turn out. How about an update, maybe a pic or two.
Thanks
Greg
Don't forget the pics guys.
I hope the earthquake this morning didn't adversely affect this event or the folks visiting and living in Montana.
Well I guess nobody went.
They are probably having too much fun to stop and grab a camera.
We planned, we went, we saw, and we took pics....just takes me time to put them up.
The quick assessment was that it exceeded our goals in attendance and enthusiasm. A huge success by all accounts.
The Jamboree turned out great! By all guesstimates we had in the neighborhood of a 100 folks building bows over the course of the weekend! Will get some pictures up loaded soon!
Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen!
Thanks,
Tried to post a few pictures, but I guess photobucket is no longer the tried and true it used to be, will have to see if I can figure out this new thing/place?
Thanks,

Thanks for the pics Tim. It was cool to see a pic of Jim Rempp showing me how to chase a ring on my bow. He worked his butt off helping people learn the art of bow building, as did the rest of the instructors who were dedicated to ensuring that the students had some degree of success. Even the strings for each bow were made on the spot at no charge.
I'll be back next year, if nothing else just to visit with the wonderful people I met this year.
Mike
Here's a link to a short timelapse of Saturday....from about 6 am till 7 pm - one pic per minute.

I have pics, but I refuse to wade through the photobucket mess.
The Jamboree was fantastic! I had a blast. I didn't quite complete my bow, but I'm off to a great start thanks to the instructors, especially Walt Francis. Thanks for helping me so much at the end, Walt!

Looks like you had a good turn out. I liked the time lapse. Lots of activity. It is amazing the lure of building your own bow. It brings out people you never would have expected.
If I was there I could never finish a bow. I would sitting there taking in the view all day long. Montana is such an amazing state.
Good for you guys for putting this on. I hope you get the much needed help to continue.
Nice video. It's good to see so many people interested in self bows. Good luck with next years event.
That time lapse was pretty cool. I'm hoping you have another get together next year . I'd really like to see Montana.
Very cool time lapse, Mark.
Looks like lots of folks enjoying building selfbows and passing on a great tradition.
Thanks all....but especially thanks to the Oklahoma Selfbow Society members that made the trip up with a good load of osage, and shared their expertise and help in pulling this off. Also thanks to the Traditional Bowhunters of MT, who funded the whole weekend. This couldn't have been done without either of their support, and future efforts will also require theirs or similar commitments. Also to the many bowyers across MT, ID, OR, and WA who made the drive to help out.
For a first effort this went well in most all aspects. There is always 20/20 hindsight to make adjustments for future events, but this one - for a first effort - exceeded our expectations and helped light the fires for more.
I'll try and bring up more videos, and pics, when time allows me to open a new hosting account....I don't have time or desire to dive back into the photobucket mess.
