I used this sight  http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/all.  I have been using the map for WA with issues.

Me too and they are free.  Installation is easy too.

On  X maps are fine but I don't know what you would be paying for.

Onx maps for me as well. I have a couple state chips for my gps unit...but going forward, I think I would just subscribe to their program ... for like 30 bucks a year you can get all the maps on your smartphone.
Not sure of the details but that is cheap for all of the info you get.
Mark
edit...Ive not used anything from gps file depot, but with the onx maps wherever you are standing it will tell you if you are on public or private, and gives you the landowners name for the private, as well as the hunting unit you are standing in (boundries). as well as other info.

Onx for me as well.  Found to be very accurate in Colorado and Nebraska.

Found seeps and springs about 20-25 feet across that showed on map.  I was surprised by level of detail.

How good does a GPS work? Do you always have to buy maps in addition to the GPS? What GPS is best for hunting? Do they work where a cell phone map does not? I'm in PA. No phone service where I hunt. I'd like to use a GPS for scouting new country and taking shortcuts on the way in the dark.
I've done it plenty of times without but could make better use of time on weekend scouts. Stealing a line from Daniel Boone - "I've never been lost but I will admit to being confused".
Thanks,
Tedd

OnX is a map program? For any brand of GPS?

Sorry for the novice questions...The Garmin GPS64ST say it comes with topo 100K maps for the USA. And 1 yr birdseye sat maps.
Do I need to by OnX also. What does OnX do that the Topo 100 K does not?
Thanks for any assistance!

I bought mid-atlantic states map off the big auction site very cheap. It covers several states and is 24k, not 100k. Much better detail.

I'm using the Gaia app and it worked pretty well on my scouting trip. Maps are free and there's only 20 bucks for the initial app download. Works well without cell signal too, just need to pre download the maps before leaving home.

I do have to bring couple phone chargers (backup of backup) to make sure my phone doesn't die.
