Title: Ben Pearson KM Special?
Post by: tomsm44 on June 08, 2017, 05:22:00 PM
Anybody know anything about these bows?  Years built, performance, etc.?  I have a lead on one, but am not familiar with the model.  I have two mid '60s BP Hunters, and they're as good as any vintage bow I've shot.  Just curious how the KM Special would compare.

Thanks,
Matt

I have one.  It was the first bow I ever owned, and I got it when I was 15, in 1981.  It is the only bow I have ever harvested a deer with!

Mine is marked KM Special, BP795, on the lower limb belly. #40xx 2 28, but scales at #43 @ 28.
58" AMO.  Still in great shape, and shoots as hard as it did all those years ago.

Info was almost impossible for me to find, but as near as I can discover, it was a Hunter model manufactured to be sold / distributed by retailers, rather than dealers, such as Montgomery Ward, Western Auto Hardware, etc.

The man that gave that bow to me told me that he bought it in 1959, from our local, small town hardware store.

So I just got one in a trade tonight.  AN-7145, 58", 45# @ 28".  I shot about 20 arrows through it, and it shoots great.  Its my understanding from another website that the KM meant it was manufactured specifically for K-Mart.  I'm not sure if that is correct, but that is about as much as I could find.  No one seemed to know the years these models were made, but its no big deal to me.  I was just looking for a lighter draw and shorter length bow for ground hunting, and this fits the bill.

The grip is a bit chunky for me, so I will probably rasp is down closer to a straight grip/low wrist shape and narrow if down a bit too.  It has some dings and scratches that I will smooth out too.  But for what I have in it, I wont be spending too much time or money.

Im also thinking about putting a 4 arrow kwikee kwiver in it, after I get some riser inserts.

Emailed Ben Pearson, and got a reply this morning.  The customer service rep said they bought the company in 2014 and the exchange didnt come with any info on a lot of old models, KM Special included.
