Title: Arrow tuning
Post by: Ari_Bonn on June 08, 2017, 09:22:00 AM
Getting my new Two tracks Echo very soon.
I got plenty of wood spines to shoot but I would like to try to tune some aluminum's maybe high foc carbons.

The bow is 55#@27"(my draw) self cut 1/16th from center. Its a string follow hill bow.

2018 cut to 28" bop with 200gr point sound about right?

What about for carbons?   200 needs to be the point weight as I still want to shoot my hill heads and they weight about 200 with adapter.

My bear Griz at 55 will shoot carbon 400's w 250 up front....but I switched to 500's w 200 up front now.

I would try to borrow a few and bare shaft them to see what the bow likes

Probably a .400 spine.
Those work well from several of my bows in the 50# range with 225 up front, that's on a 29" arrow
I have used 500 spine with 175-200 up front on my hill Wesley special LB 50#@28".
If you don't have carbons on hand to try I would recommend a test kit from a sponsor.

I like to bare shaft tune . After years of using carbons I can guess fairly close to what length I need so I cut it a little longer add the head weight I want and go shoot. Trim the shaft as needed
When the shafts get close to shooting where I want them I Fletch a couple and continue bare shafting to fine tune.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube that can explain it better than I.
If I have to change head weight I will but I try to stick to a particular head.  I play around with weighted inserts, brass washers etc.
not much of a paper tuner, I just want them to hit where I'm pointing 'em

my current set up is a modern production bear super grizzly 50@28 D97 brace 7 3/4" . GT trads 5575 (.400) 29 1/8 BOP,  3 x 5" fletch 50gr brass insert 175 gr BH/FP.
I'm tuning a 1950s howatt sharpshooter at present 46@28 dacron string 8 1/8" brace.  so far bare shafting has lead me to a GT trad 3355 (.500) standard insert, 29" bop 3 x 5" fletch and a 175gr BH/FP.  still tweaking the weight

NHbuck - I'm bare shafting with the goal of the arrow sticking straight in target- not nock right or nock left
