Title: Similar bow to Great Northern Ghost
Post by: Hoosierarcher88 on June 02, 2017, 03:14:00 PM
What bows out there would give a similar feel/performance to a great northern ghost? I have a 64" 55#@28" ghost and absolutely love it. Would like to get another bow in 48-50# for late season cold weather when the muscles are a bit stiff. Ive had several other recurves including bear grizzly, 60" super kodiak, cheyenne, supermag 48, browning nomad stalker, an old pearson, howatt hunter and morrison and have tested pretty much everything else bear, martin, striker and hoyt make at the ata show and have yet to find something that compares to my ghost. Its so much smoother to draw and seems much faster than the others. I know the smoothness is probably coming from the 64" length but is there anything that i couod look into that would be similar in smoothness and speed?

Slight misprint on that one and not sure where i got the model name mixed up. Its the great northern shadow, not the ghost

You might take a look at the Toelke Super Static. Hard to find a recurve smoother or quieter.

Would any of the r/d bows compare on speed or is the recurve design inherently faster? I thought the strikers were pretty smooth but hard to compare on speed as they had around 400 grain arrows to test them with and i shoot between 700-750 grains. I dont want high speed with a light arrow, i just want acceptable cast with my super heavy arrows. Right now shooting 3 under with a 720 grain arrow my point on range is 30 yards which to me for my shooting style is ideal.

A McBroom Mojo possibly?

The mojo has a similar look but wonder how the feel would be being 4" shorter. The toelke 64ss does look very promising. Ive seen plenty pictures of toelke bow but have yet to get the pleasure of shooting one

Toelke SS, no reservations.

True, I don't believe McBroom offers a 64" Mojo, but, he does offer a 60" Mojo.

If you really like that Great Northern bow, why would you want to look for something similar but made by someone else?

I love the great northern but you never know if there is something better out there unless you look

Would any of the ilf bows compare in performance? I have an olympic setup(25" riser with medium limbs) fully decked out but its not really a good comparison.

Ilf bows with higher end limbs usually perform better than many trad recurves.

You are going to have a very different "feel" with an ILF metal riser.  Not talking performance, talking the feel of the bow from set up to follow thru.

What are you looking for?  Performance, accuracy, traditional appeal, cosmetic appearance, etc?  When you say better, what needs to improve?

The best thing you can do as far as shooting a bow and arrow is shoot one bow, and learn that bow.  Not that model, that bow.  Archery is a martial art and developing a flow and consistency will happen if variables like the bow change less often.

This many times leads to improved shooting.  No kidding.  Not what many people want to hear, but truth...

Really what im looking for when i mean performance is good cast without stacking of the draw and quiet. My great northern shoots much flatter than my grizzly and the super kodiak i had which is nice being that i like a very heavy arrow. Really my only complaint with the great northern isnt much of a complaint but more of a difference compared to others that ive shot and that is that its so light weight and not cut to center or past center

I hear ya.  I like a recurve cut to center or past also.  I have a Toelke coming Super Static 64".  It is hung up with USPS "In transition"!  When and If I get it, I will let you know what it is like.
It is a very similar design to the GN ghost, 50 style recurve.  Mass weight can be added by adding a bow quiver.  I have always thought that this was a cool looking curve...

I guess unknowingly i became fond of the 50's style. Are they in general more streamlined in the riser area than more modern styles

I do not think there is an "exact" definition per say, of a "50's" style, but they are more streamlined riser, less mass typically is what that refers to by many bowyers.  The bow in the picture is a Black Widow Wilson Brothers is what I was told as I did not know the make.

BTW:  Not me in the photo.  That is a great archer from the past.  Just an older bow that is cool looking.

I e shot the great northern ghosts. They are good bows. I prefer my st Joe river bow classic longbow. It's worth giving Tracey and Dave a look. They are sponsors here.

^^^what he said.

St Joe River bows makes a very nice 50's style recurve.  Not only that, but the riser can be made super light weight, or super heavy.

I have a 56" Torrent from St Joe that does not start to stack until 30".  I'd imagine a 64" version would not stack at all.

I really dont need to worry much about long draw stacking, ive worked on my form for about the last 2 years and have settled in comfortably to 26.25" draw on my trade setups. My 64" great northern feels very smooth, it would be nice if i could find something shorter that still offers that smoothness

I have tried pretty successfully to own all the 50s style recurves over the years. Both vintage and newer customs. It has been a favorite style bow for me for a longtime. They went well with my longbows. because of their lightweight and lower grips.

I have had 3 Superghosts. My 1st 50s style was a Superghosts over 20 years ago.Sixty inches and all osage limbs. It was superb bow for me.

A couple that I like being built right now are the Fox Breed in 62 inches.Mines a 2 Piece.I have had two of these that were both T.Ds.Superb bow in every way you could judge a bow!My favorite really. It has all real bamboo limbs. Not action boo or amberboo. The bow has superb lines and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.Very narrow deep cored limbs and is a full working recurve.A bit of a longer riser than most with long graceful fadeouts.Excellant design overall

I liked my Holm made River Runner a lot that was 62".Its now available in 64 inches.I bet You would like that one.

Their are many fine candidates in that style bow. Those two are worth looking at IMO if your shopping for one.

Bow man if i could i would. For the most part im stuck being at home right now and not really able to get around. Had a freak accident malfunction with a riding lawnmower about a month ago and had to have surgery to reconnect the tendons, remove about a 50 cent piece chunk of bone anf rebuild the knee joint in my left leg. So im not moving around much.

Thanks bow man. Itll be a while for recovery. I cant move anything from the knee down but i can kind of waddle around by locking my brace down to limit movement. I think i may hit up the clovedale shoot this weekend just to see how things are and meet some people since its less than an hour from home. Ive never been to an all trad shoot but am very familiar with big shoots from shooting compounds. Ive set several state records, placed repeatedly in the ibo triple crown and have won ibo world in compound freestyle class.just lost the joy in shooting with my compounds and it turned into almost a robotic routine. I switched to trad and got back that enjoyment that ive missed for several years

Have you tried out a St. Joe River Bows recurve yet?  Nice solid bows.

You should definitely take a look at a Fox Breed. I had a 62" a while back and it was smooth, fast, and quiet. Ron's workmanship is top of the line also. Bow got to be too heavy for my arthritis or I would not have let it go.

If you're looking for a 50s style Recurve, which is what a GN Ghost was modeled after, why not get a Recurve actually made in the 50s.  An original Bear 57 Kodiak  has all the attributes you've mentioned in previous posts and you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks if you dig around a little.

I'll second the fox breed. When I was looking for a 50s style recurve I tried many and finally got my hands on one and fell in love at the first shot! Mine is 55# at 28" and 58 " long. I may replace it soon for a longer bow, but it will be sad parting if I do!
