I was thinking about how many of you are getting great results tuning for a high FOC with carbons and If those of us that are still shooting aluminums can benefit as well? The thing that has me a little concerned is, is it possible to put too much weight up front on an aluminum shaft that when it goes through the archers paradox the shaft will take a set and stay bent? I'm hoping to hear from anyone that has first hand knowledge and not just speculation. Anyone?
I have front loaded aluminums to 250 gr. and have had no problems. You just have to start with a shaft that's too stiff and add weight to the point until it acts like the right spine. It seems to be a great way to add total weight to carbons and alum. I've never noticed it bending too much during the shot that it bent the arrow.
I'm not a fan of heavy foc's in anything, but I really don't see a need for it in aluminum arrows. The reason it became popular in carbon's was they are hard to get to a proper weight for trad bows. You can BUY heavy aluminum shafts for all, but the heaviest stick bows.
I tried point loading aluminums once upon a time. I could get okay flight but overall the results were just not satisfactory.
I had great luck front loading AL's. My best results were in the 18-20% range.
I'm pulling 47# at 30" out of my T/D recurve bow. My arrow is a XX78 Super Slam aluminum arrow, cut 31" long. It's fletched with three 5" parabolic feathers with 11 degrees of helical and I shoot a 150 grain Wensel Woodsman broadhead. The size of the arrow is a surprising 2213 and I shoot with a tab. When paper tuned, it makes a bullet hole with three little cuts in the paper for the broadhead's blades. No other tears right, left, up or down.
I know FOC has to do with frontal weight,but what exactly do the letters foc stand for??
I have a brother who used to be like Jack Benny with his arrows. He had a dozen that lasted so many shots that metal fatigue (out of a compound) got so bad they would bend with each shot and needed straightening. This was with just a normal 125 field point.
2016 28" BOP 200-250 grains up front out of 60# Liberty English work well 225 seems to be about the best.
FOC = Front of Center
I shoot 26" 1916's with 250 up front and they shoot great.
Hey Bucky, how do you come up with 250gr. target tips in 9/32 for those 1916's?? :confused: :bigsmyl:

I think you may get some flight problems if you get much higher than 20%. I am right around there and I have been very pleased with the pass through on a deer I shot this year where the arrow literally imbedded in a log after going through the deer. Here is my set up. 60# recurve, 29 1/2" 2018 legacy, 125 grain Magnus II with a 75 grain insert (ie. 200 up front). I think there was a very good article on FOC and aluminum/carbon issues from Dennis Kamstra? in Traditional Bowhunter some time back in his tips from the old timer. If you have the magazine you could possibly find it.
I don't. I use the 125 steel adapters and 125 glue on field points. They are bigger than the shaft.
